Kenya's Interview with East Bay Loop

It has been a long love affair with music and now I’m here to stay and create. Music is life!”

Kenya Placido attributes her initial flirtation with singing to the opportunity that she had, like many young vocalists, to singing in the church choir. Kenya has grown up from singing in the pulpit at church to belting her heart out amongst the likes of Jill Scott, Brian McKnight and the Black Eyed Peas, to name a few.

Her skills have pushed her from behind the pulpit to singing backup for international stars. Now her voice has propelled her from the back of the stage to shine, and we couldn’t be happier that her stage has expanded, especially since she has a love for the East Bay.

Although you can’t catch this vocalist at your next Sunday service, you will be able to buy her long awaited solo album in the near future! Whether she is pursuing her solo career, singing in association with famous artists, or getting international air play, this diva is the real deal. She has the full package, as she co-produces her own tracks, writes and arranges her songs, and dances. Kenya is currently working on recording her debut album entitled “Reflections”.

Currently Kenya is under Ruthless Alliance Management and is ASCAP certified.

SWAG MAGAZINE INTERVIEW WITH KENYA MUSIC

SWAG Magazine CA Interview with - Kenya Music: 02/09/2011

- Swag Mag: Today we are here with R&b/Soul/pop singer, - Kenya Music:...

First off we want to thank you for taking the time out to interview with us and our viewers. How are you doing today?

- Kenya: I'm great! Happy to be here interviewing with Swag Mag and excited to be featured in the special edition as a breakout artist.

- Swag Mag: How did you get started in the music business?

- Kenya: I got into the music business by way of some family members who are in the music business and by singing in the church choir.

swag,kenyamusic

- Swag Mag: You started singing in the church and eventually blessed the music industry with your music and talent. Can you tell us, how that transformation was for you?

- Kenya: I made the transformation from singing in the church to actually singing outside of church and recording in the studio when other musicians/singers asked me to go record with them or do background vocals for them when they were from church as well. At that time, I was kind of shy and not very confident in my singing ability as an actual talent. Because as we know, most talent comes from the church and there were so many other talented people. I gained confidence after recording my vocals on other people tracks and slowly started getting a demand from people who wanted to use my voice on their recordings.

- Swag Mag:At what point in your life did you decide to turn your music into a career?

- Kenya: I decided to turn my music into a career when I noticed my love for music was stronger than anything else. I would try to walk away from singing all together and do other things like Fashion Designing, Broadcasting, Audio/Video production, but nothing satisfied me like singing. I fell in love with singing and for the final time of leaving singing and coming back to music, I decided to stick with it this time. It has been a long love affair with music and now I'm here to stay and create. Music is life!

- Swag Mag: You were a back up singer for some time, what were some of the things that helped you decide to
come out as a solo artist?

- Kenya: As a background singer to many people big and small and various genres of music, the thing that catapulted me into stardom as a soloist was just the faith that I could be a solo artist and my confidence was stronger. It's like I came out of a shell that I'd been hiding in. When I emerged as a soloist, I took my experiences I had with other artists, groups, and performance and grew into a blossoming flower. It definitely planted the seeds to become what I am today as an artist.

- Swag Mag: I see that you have opened up for several "A" list celebrities throughout your career, what were those experiences like?

- Kenya: I began to get huge endorsements from them and others. Those experiences were phenomenal in leading me into the next level of becoming an artist. It provided me with a great sense of music business knowledge, exposure, and connections in the industry. Overall, on my tours to go to studios and record, it gave me the boost I needed to become an identity of myself and discover my own singing style!

- Swag Mag: Your music have a strong productive presence in the Bay Area, how do people view your music outside of the Bay Area?

- Kenya: Even though I'm originally from the East Coast, I've been in the Bay Area for years now and feel like I have an overwhelming sense of support and comradeship from fellow artists and fans alike. People really seem to enjoy my music in the Bay Area while bobbing their heads, dancing and clapping their hands during my performances. In New York, I get lots of Love!!! And it's just like being home. I get hugs, kisses and lots of compliments from my fans there. In Atlanta, Vegas, and L.A. I have been asked to return several times and the owners of the clubs or lounges take care of me very well in hopes of me returning. I plan to have many future shows internationally in the near future. Especially, after the release of my Album entitled "Reflections". At that time, I will have some phenomenal new songs and I have a very large fan base in France, Canada and the U.K. so I'm really excited about performing there! And I'm really excited to return to France where I performed once and where I was once a foreign exchange student in high school.

- Swag Mag: When creating your music, where do you pull your inspiration from?

- Kenya: When I write my music, I write from my heart. I write from painful and happy experiences and memories. My travels and relationships have been very fulfilling so I have a lot to write about. I also, love to co-write because I get a great source of my material from connecting with people who have similar experiences and it's nice to know you can relate to everyone and draw such inspiration and support from them.

- Swag Mag: If you had to describe yourself in five words, what would those words be?

- Kenya: I would have to say: Creative, Compassionate, Loving, Strong, and Diligent!

- Swag Mag: Where do you see yourself  in the next three to five years?

- Kenya: In the next five years I plan to have a really great life and successful music career. I plan to be like some of my icons. I really love Christina Aguilera, Jennifer Lopez, Kimora Lee Simmons, and Jessica Simpson to name a few. They are really successful and powerful women. I plan to be a brand name like them. I want to be a household name like "Oprah". I want to be a media conglomerate. I want to have my own Fashion Line out and my own fragrance too. Possibly some shoes and cosmetics line like Iman too. At least this is what I'm going to strive towards. Who says you can't do it all? Or at least try to?

- Swag Mag: What would you like to say to all of the viewers, supporters and fans.

- Kenya: I always offer words of encouragement to upcoming artist to stick to your art no matter what anyone eles says. If you know you have talent, just keep going toward your goals. No one can stop the plan God has for you. It's never too late. Just look at Susan Boyle or Andrea Bocelli who were diamonds in the ruff and undiscovered for years. So never give up on your dreams.
